Fort Aguada – History, Attractions & Beach Resort

Fort Aguada Goa Fort Aguada is one of the most visited Portuguese forts in Goa. The construction of this famous classical Portuguese fortress dates back to the 16th century. It was primarily constructed with the aim to protect Goa against the Marathas & the Dutch. Today however, the fort stands as one of the most recognized heritage sites of Goa.
Location: The Aguada Fort is located on the Sinquerim Beach at a distance of about 18 km from Panajim, Goa. This old fort stands overlooking the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea. Strategically located on the mouth of the Mandovi River, the fort is large enough to cover the entire peninsula lying south-west of Bardez.

Aguada Fort Attractions: The Aguada Fort derives its name from the word “Aguada” meaning water in Portuguese. Constructed in 1612 AD, this small sized fortress was built to safeguard Goa against enemy attacks. Though not one of the best preserved monuments of Goa, Fort Aguada stands as a pleasant reminder of the splendor & architectural style during the Portuguese rule. While the fort itself exhibits a strong historic association, the key feature is the freshwater spring inside the fort that was earlier used for providing water supply to ships. Another major attraction here is the 4-storey Portuguese lighthouse standing atop the fort. Constructed in 1864, this is the oldest-of-its-kind lighthouses in Asia. Added attraction & recreation are offered by the Sinquerim & Candolim Beach at the base of the fort.

Fort Aguada Beach Resort: Though endless trials & tribulations had literally left the fort to ruins, a complete makeover by the Taj Group of hotels has today made it one of the most sought after beach resorts of Goa. Each of the 130 rooms of this resort including cottages, terrace suites, villas & deluxe rooms reminds visitors of the grandeur of the past while allowing them to enjoy the most modern amenities. Also featured on the resort are nine restaurants & recreational facilities like mountaineering, squash, tennis & a range of water sports. Overlooking the wide expanse of the Arabian Sea, the 5-star rated Fort Aguada Beach Resort is undoubtedly the perfect destination for a refreshing holiday.

Best Time to Visit: Though the fort is accessible all year round, the best time to enjoy the sights & activities is between December to February.

How to Reach? Mapusa & Panajim are the two places from where the Fort can be reached. You may either avail the regular buses that ply in the region or rent a taxi or motorcycle for a leisure drive.
