Cabo Fort – Official Residence of Governor of Goa

Cabo Fort Goa Nestled in a panoramic corner of Goa, the Cabo Fort is one of the many heritage sites of Goa which today is an important tourist attraction. Built way back in 1540, the Cabo Fort or the Cabo Palace Fortress once housed the Franciscan Monastery which later in 1594 AD became the official residence of Goa’s governor.
Location: The Cabo Fort or Cabo Palace as it is known is surrounded by the Indian Ocean in the west & Marmugao & Fort Aguada in the north. It is located at a distance of about 9 km from Panaji.

History: Despite the romantic appearance of the fort, it exhibits the legacy of long ago battles. Though its exact date of fortification is unknown as yet, the fort was built to guard openings to river Zuari & Mandovi. During the same period, a small chapel dedicated to Our Virgin Lady of the Cape was constructed at the end of the mansion. Ruled initially by the Portuguese & Indians, the fort was converted into a prison in the 18th century when it came under the British rule.

Cabo Fort Attractions: Once a landmark for the seafarers, the fort today is known as the Raj Bhavan or Raj Niwas, the official residence of the Governor of Goa. While this fort palace enjoys the beauty of its solitude, it also houses many interesting attractions. The Durbar Hall used for official occasions like swearing-in ceremonies is a magnificent room. Other rooms include a beautiful dining room, seven double rooms & three suites. Endless precious collectibles adorn the palace like, beautiful wooden furniture, Chinese silver & porcelain, Bohemian chandeliers, intricately carved figurines of Hindu temples & gods & many such assets.

A trip to the Cabo Fort can be combined with leisure activities like a picnic by the beach or a swim in the emerald waters of the Arabian Sea. A Cabo Fort tour is the best way to cherish the architectural magnificence of medieval era while being close to the sea.

How to Reach? From the National Highway 17 leading to Karwar, a long road branches off to lead you to the fort. Hiring a taxi or auto is the best way to reach the Cabo Fort.
