Jog Falls, the Supreme Excursions from Goa

Jog Falls Jog Falls holds the pride of being India’s highest and Asia’s second highest water fall. This waterfall is also the grandest amongst all Karnataka waterfalls. Jog Falls is located in Shimoga District of Karnataka, 30 km away from Sagara, 104 km from Shimoga, and 379 km away from Bangalore. This is the most visited excursions from Goa.
The River Sharavati drops from an edge of a cliff to a height of 292m below, which forms an exquisite natural beauty, the Jog Falls. Jog falls is also known as Gerusoppaa falls. The River Sharavati originates at Ambuthirtha in Thirthahalli taluk, flows north-west through the Western Ghats forming the Jog Falls before joining the Arabian Sea at Honavar.

The Jog Falls is found amidst lush green vegetation of the Western Ghats. This magnificent and spectacular sight has four different cascades known locally as Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket. The highest fall is Raja, which falls to 250m, next is Roarer while the Rocket descends in rapturous outbursts just like its name. Rani flows gracefully, without any outbursts. The roaring water falls, thick smoke of fog and the steep heights surely makes Jog Falls a memorable sight. The 50km long Hirebhasgar reservoir is located here only which control the flow of the Sharavati River. Along with the waterfall accompanies the mighty Linganmakki Dam, across the River Sharavati and there is also a hydroelectric power generator.

Tourists can enjoy the beauty of the falls in many different ways and can take pleasure in lots of activities in and around the Jog Falls. During Monsoons the Jog falls voluminous creating a spectacular sight with rainbows. Take a refreshing bath in the falls, trekking can be done over the steep cliff, with the right expertise. Take a plunge in the pool formed by the Jog falls. The Watergates of the Linganmakki Dam is opened during the monsoons, an ideal place to visit.

  • Honnemaradu : Situated on the back waters of River Sharavathi, this island formed with the backwater of Linganmakki Dam is famous for water sports.
  • Tunga Anicut Dam : Situated 15 km from Shimoga, this dam was built across the river Tungabadra. You can enjoy boat trips around the lake.
  • Lion Tiger Reserve : This Lion - Tiger Reserve / Safari is located nearly 12 km from Shimoga towards Jog Falls.

The best time to visit the Jog is in winter when the sky is clear of the mist. The place is well connected by rail and road from Shimoga city and number of government & private buses ply between Shimoga and Jog Falls. August-December is considered the season of best flow and the best time to visit.
